August 2012
So this is my quarter of a century anniversary – back in 1987 I started as a trainee with the Bath and West Evening Chronicle on August 1 as it was then with its offices in Westgate Street, Bath. Copy was typed on a typewriter – no computers then although they were on their way. A teleprinter clicked and whirred in the background bringing in national stories as they happened.
25 years has brought many changes yet newspapers have survived and will, I believe, continue to survive but have to change in order to do so just as journalists have had to adapt too.
And I’ve certainly done that as August also marks my first year as a freelance journalist and three months since I decided to become a limited company. A small business is extremely hard work but great fun and I’m meeting – and working with – some great people.
